Galway-Mayo Institute of Technology (GMIT) TTO

The Galway-Mayo Institute of Technology operates from five campuses in Galway City, Castlebar, Letterfrack and Mountbellew. GMIT’s integrated approach to Research, Development and Innovation (RDI) is delivered through its Research Centres and Innovation Hubs. We apply our knowledge in IP and business incubation, to link companies and Institutional expertise, and work with national and international partners. Our research centres, focusing on marine and freshwater science, medical and engineering technologies complement our established expertise in science and engineering.

Emerging areas such as Information and Communication Technologies, Tourism, Arts and Design are opening new avenues for research.

Linking with enterprise is central to GMIT’s RDI strategy: Over 60% of our post-graduate projects are co-supervised by enterprise partners. As well as fostering academic excellence, we focus strongly on achieving positive impact through our research, particularly where that delivers regional development. Recent examples include: GMIT’s pivotal role in product development for medical device companies; Informing national policy regarding fisheries management; and, Working with communities in energy sustainability.

The GMIT Technology Transfer Office (TTO) is responsible for the professional management of the transfer and enhancement of knowledge generated by the Institute to industry in support of economic development. Commercialisation services include:

Management of the intellectual property (IP) and campus company policies: the capture, protection and commercialisation of IP - through licences, options, assignments/Institute spin-outs.
Provision of best practice IP and contractual frameworks to enable professional industry-academic engagements.
Commercial, technical, financial and IP due diligence evaluations and innovation audits of research projects with commercial potential for Institute and collaborative industrial projects.
